Fun with the Classics

On my quest to research children's literature, I have come across so many wonderful tales. I thought it would be fun to post a new title for you every other week or so. Some of them you may know, but I hope you find some new titles in here as well. Happy reading!

Ok, I'm sure you recognized this title... I re-read this classic book last night after putting my children to sleep and I was pleasantly surprised by how much I still enjoyed it. The illustrations are just as captivating as the tale of Max and his wild night. It reminded me of my own son with his active and imaginative spirit. I can only hope he joins Max in this adventure when he's a bit older.

Where the Wild Things Are won the 1964 Caldecott Medal as the "Most Distinguished Picture Book of the Year." This book was ahead of its time in dealing with dark emotions not normally seen in children's picture books. The part I love the best is at the end when Max has dealt with his anger and mischief and realizes that he wants to be where "someone loved him best of all." He then returns to his room and sees his dinner waiting for him.

I came across some fun activities to do with your school-age children after reading this book. Here's the link for the website: http://www.easyfunschool.com/article1293.html
